EMC(Electro Magnetic Compatibility): electromagnetic compatibility, is the interaction of electrical and electronic devices with their electromagnetic environment and other devices. All electronic devices have the potential to emit electromagnetic fields. With the proliferation of electronic devices in everyday life - TVS, washing machines, electronic ignition lights, traffic lights, cell phones, ATMs, anti-theft tags, to name a few - there is a high likelihood that devices will interfere with each other.
EMC includes the following three meanings:
EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) = EMI (electromagnetic interference) + EMS (electromagnetic immunity) + electromagnetic environment
1.EMI(Electro Magnetic Interference): electromagnetic interference, that is, the equipment or system in a certain environment should not generate electromagnetic energy exceeding the requirements of the corresponding standards during normal operation. EMI is a product of "speed", the operating frequency of product IC will become higher and higher, and the EMI problem will become more and more serious; however, the test standards have not been relaxed, but may only be tightened;
2.EMS (Electro Magnetic Susceptibility) : electromagnetic immunity, that is, when the equipment or system is in a certain environment, during normal operation, the equipment or system can withstand electromagnetic energy interference within the range specified in the corresponding standards.
3. Electromagnetic environment: the working environment of the system or equipment.
Here, we use an old picture as a simple example of what EMI looks like. On the left, you'll see a picture taken from an old TV. Since it is not designed for EMI, older TVS are very susceptible to failures caused by EMI and its environment. The picture on the right shows the results of this interference.
EMC protection design
1, Reduce the interference signal at the source - for example, the shorter the rise/fall time of the digital signal, the more high-frequency spectrum it contains; In general, the higher the frequency, the easier it is to couple to the receiver. If we want to reduce the interference caused by digital signals, we can lengthen the rise/fall time of digital signals. However, the premise is to ensure the normal operation of the device receiving the digital signal.
2.Reduce the receiver's sensitivity to interference - this is often difficult because reducing the sensitivity to interference may also affect its reception of useful signals.
3. Increase the ground area of the mainboard and components to be fully grounded.
